“It has never been my instinct to bend nature to my will—I consider my practice to be more of a conversation with the natural world,” says landscape architect Patricia Benner, who operates out of Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Her beautiful, site-appropriate exterior designs—fusions of interesting materiality, clean lines, and serene color schemes—share a clarity that’s grounded in modern design but informed by classical notions of scale and proportion. She hails from New England originally and brings a sense of lush, North Atlantic verdancy to even the most drought-tolerant landscapes. “My plant palette attempts to reconcile a love of leafy, abundant East Coast gardens with the countless expressions of nature here in the West,” she explains. Whether creating small-garden gems or complex estates, her work always emphasizes long-term sustainability and harmony with site.

I see gardens as a natural extension of the home—just as interior spaces create sanctuary, so too should the surrounding environment.
